In Australia, the most common wild honey bee is the British Black – a variety that was dominant across large swathes of Europe for millennia, before being almost wiped out by disease around the time of World War One. Though only recently rediscovered in Britain, the bee has continued to thrive in the Australian outback, where it was introduced by European colonists.
