So, Knell and colleagues investigated further, and found that this idea doesn"t really work – there is little variation between the frills of different triceratops species, so this is unlikely to have been their purpose. With this theory potentially discounted, it becomes more reasonable to speculate that they were used to impress other triceratops or fight off other males – that they helped them to get laid.
